AUTHOR Dr. Janine Verge, President of Accessible Hearing Solutions Inc. Audiologist Both Duncan Floyd, project manager, and I attended a wonderful lecture today from Dr. Mary Beth Jennings, professor from Western University. She presented at the School of Human Communication Disorders (SHCD) at Dalhousie University. The presentation focused on what women and men want to hear about working with a hearing loss. The lecture was based on the extensive research Dr. Jennings has conducted on hearing loss and accessibility. https://www.dal.ca/news/events/2017/11/03/shcd_colloquium_series_fall_2017.html Here is a list of important links to some of Dr. Jenning's work on hearing loss and accessibility: https://www.researchgate.net/scientific-contributions/31468497_Mary_Beth_Jennings AUTHOR Dr. Janine Verge, President of Accessible Hearing Solutions Inc. Audiologist On September 16, 2017 the Atlantic Film Festival in Nova Scotia premiered the movie "Halifax Explosion: The Deaf Experience," written by Jim McDermott shown above (left).
Here is an overview of the film: "On December 6, 1917, the collision of two ships in the Halifax Harbour led to one of the biggest explosions in human history. On the next day, powerful blizzards swept through, leaving many survivors exposed to extreme cold. The Halifax School for the Deaf was near the Explosion. Yet, all the people in the School survived. How? Amazing stories of community, survival and heroism will be shared in American Sign Language and Maritimes Sign Language." Accessible Hearing Solutions attended the event. Shown above (right) are Duncan Floyd, project manager, and myself. We both thought the movie was extremely well done and very timely considering this is the 100th anniversary of the Halifax Explosion. It was fascinating learning about the rich history of the Halifax School for the Deaf and the amazing stories of community and survival. The movie was well researched and did a wonderful job at re-creating the events of the day. We would highly recommend this movie to others.
